New York Whirlwinds - 1921
Boxing organizer Tex Rickard formed the Whirlwinds to bring
basketball into Madison Square Garden. Their most famous
battle took place on April 16 of that year against the original
Celtics. They were to play a three game series to determine
the champion of the Metropolitan League after a trouncing in
the first game the Celtics game back to tie the series. The
third game was never played, as rumors of a point-shaving
scandal were circulating.
Nat Holman and Marty Friedman count as two of the most
famous players to don a whirlwinds jersey.
